Having watched and heard The Millionaire on TV, Paul Frees pronounced the name as
John Ber-es-ford (3 syllables), not John Bersford (2 syllables) as you did here.
Other than that, great intro and bio and thanks for the program.

[...] I spend a whole lot of time on this blog whining about things that disappoint me…and it seems as one grows older, one is less tolerant of disappointment. But not everything in my life is a bother…some things make me actually smile, or pleasantly surprise me, and I don’t blog about those things nearly often enough. In the spirit of the most wonderful holiday season which I simply cannot let go, I’ve collected a few of them here, after the jump. [...]

Charlie,Very nice, Jill did do a great job; she is quite the talent. If I had a theme song I'd want it jazz oriented and perhaps sung by Kay Starr. I guess that's not going to happen.

YES! That's what I've been saying since this whole thing started. Jimmy Kimmel tore Leno apart. Not Leno's fault..of course it's NBC'S stupidity. I'm not even a fan of Leno but I sat in front of my TV with a quizzical look on my face wondering why they were skewering him.

[...] Indeed, Leno acted (as I mentioned in a previous post) as a lame duck for five years, and still maintained the number-one position in late night, something O’Brien couldn’t maintain. Blaming Leno for this disaster is foolhardy…blame the morons at NBC instead. [...]

Hi Charlie, I have used rockbox for a long time on an Archos Jukebox and have loved it. Now if I just knew how to write playlists. haha. I like your reasoning for using the models of players with cards, but haven't seen anything that is as efficient as the ones with built in hard drives. I won't go the Ipod route either for the same reasons you mention although I'm told you could put Rockbox on one of those too. I too just want my player to just show up as an external drive. Control freak? Nah, just anal. To quote Frank "I did it Myyyyyyy Waaaaaay!"

A question was posed on the Digest looking for an MP3 player with true auto-resume. Any player that can handle Rockbox can do this...when you shut down the player in the middle of a song, on restart the "Now playing" menu item changes to "Resume Playback" (check out the graphic I put together for this article to see it), starting the previously-playing program at the point of stopping.

But with bookmarks, Rockbox goes somewhat farther than that, albeit on the playlist level and not the file level...Rockbox can be set up to allow for multiple bookmarks per file (again, listed within the playlist, so multiple files' bookmarks are all gathered together), and can even be set up to auto-create a bookmark any time you stop playing a file. For OTR, this is exactly what the doctor ordered, although it takes a while to slog through the manual for your player model to figure out how all those bookmark settings need to be set up to do this automatically...

In looking up something else, I discovered thanks to the Rockbox forums that if one holds the Select button down (the one in the middle of the scrollwheel) while plugging in the power cable, the unit does not auto-boot the Sansa firmware and continues in Rockbox. Pretty nifty, that, and removes the last impediment to using the unit in the car...ok, other than my having to buy a bunch of microSDHC cards and copy the recorded music to them...

If I find out any other interesting tidbits of information on the Fuze, I'll post them here hoping that others might benefit in future web searches.

[...] So why buy another copy of the exact same player? Well, if you check the comments in my review of the first 2G Fuze, you’ll find from ilamfan a suggestion I look at Rockbox, a free (as in beer and as in speech) replacement firmware for many MP3 players, including the V1 Fuze. I got a really good deal on a reconditioned 2G Fuze at an Internet store (which, for whatever it’s worth, came in looking every bit as shiny and “new” as the first one I purchased, complete with SanDisk earbuds and a charging cable). I figure, if I brick it with Rockbox, I’m not out much cash, and no warranty to speak of…I admit I did get lucky and receive a V1 unit (the software for V1 is “Unstable,” where the software for V2 is “Unusuable”), but I figured my odds were pretty good since the V2 units are relatively new and wouldn’t be in the refurbished bin in the quantities the V1 units would be. I am leaving the original Fuze untouched, so even if this one blows up, I still have something to use to listen to The Bob Edwards Show on my morning walks, even if it is kinda worthless for the intended use in the car.
Wich2 Says:

Win?

I have never before heard, from anyone else on either side of the age mark, the issue framed as a battle of any kind.

(*sigh*) You have intentionally misintepreted me to muddy the discussion. We are having a debate, and yes, there is a "win" and "lose" in most debates. In this case, the "win" is inevitable, which is all that I meant. But you know that, and simply use a reference to a battle as a smokescreen.

I HAVE heard, from folks such as Arthur Anderson, Cliff Carpenter, and several other Vets, expessions to the effect of, “I am very glad that there are folks like you who want this to go on after we are gone…” (which is about how dear departed Hal Stone phrased it to me.)

They are welcomed to feel that way; it has nothing whatsoever to do with the discussion at hand, other than to encourage you personally, which I assume was the point.

This discussion has, I believe, gone on long enough. You have made your position clear, and I'm pretty sure I haven't been ambivalent, either. Let us move on to other more important things now, before we completely alienate everyone reading this (assuming anyone is sticking around in the first place).
