The Mirage of War Documentary

Filed under: Radio Today, Bob Edwards Archives — Charlie Summers @ 2:02 pm

In conjunction with BobEdwardsRadio.com and our own BobEdwards.Info, over the next few weeks we’re going to post “the documentaries,” the special programs built to perform a deep-dive into a specific issue. Once they are posted here, the files will be made available to those two websites so they may update the existing links to the programs. It’s past-time these were available for those searching to hear them again.

In 2009, The Bob Edwards Show visited the Army’s billion-dollar National Training Center. Covering more than a thousand square miles of California’s Mojave Desert, Ft. Irwin and the NTC includes realistic mock villages populated by role playing Iraqi nationals and military wives who aim to give the soldiers a taste of what’s to come overseas. From the introduction:

We’re spending this Veterans Day at the Army’s National Training Center at Ft. Irwin, California - where US troops are subjected to the most realistic war simulations possible — before deploying to Iraq or Afghanistan. We’ll witness one of those exercises — complete with lED blasts and sniper fire - and get a blow-by-blow account. Next, I talk with Brigadier General Dana Pittard - former commander of the NTC. You’ll meet some of the Iraqi and American role-players who make the training as authentic as possible. Then I talk with Bertran Schultz and Matthew Brown about their experiences “in the box” at the National Training Center.

The Mirage of War: A Day in the Life of the Army’s National Training Center is a fascinating look at the preparations for war. Produced by Chad Campbell, script/roadmap included below.

Philip Roth Dies at 85

Filed under: News, Radio Today, Bob Edwards Archives — Charlie Summers @ 11:09 am

From the New York Times: Philip Roth, Towering Novelist Who Explored Lust, Jewish Life and America, Dies at 85

In 2008, Philip Roth sat in a New York studio and talked to Bob Edwards in Washington, DC about his career and his then-latest book, Indianation. From the program’s introduction:

His publisher declared the publication day to be National Indignation Day, although the author and his interviewer agree that a single day of indignation is not nearly enough. In this new book. Roth returns to the voice of a young man trying to cope in a world in which older men make all the rules. It is 1950 and the older men want the young man to go fight in Korea.

My strongest personal memory of Mr. Roth’s work was reading Portnoy’s Complaint many many years ago and laughing out loud. A lot. Many books make you smile, even chuckle; but rare is the book that causes deep-throated belly laughs.

The program starts with Bob talking to Rebecca Roberts about politics from an oh-so-much gentler time. Both program and program script (including prep work for the Roberts interview) are included below.

The King of Kong…or…um…

Filed under: News, Radio Today, Bob Edwards Archives — Charlie Summers @ 2:06 pm

Weeks ago, final Bob Edwards Show Executive Producer Chad Campbell alerted me to a news article directly focused on an interview the show broadcast over eleven years ago. Before we get to that news article, let’s revisit the interview itself.

Director Seth Gordon appeared on the program August 24th, 2007 talking with Bob about his documentary King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, which detailed the drop-dead serious sport of trying to get the high score in the ancient arcade game Donkey Kong. I know, I know, we all had our initials on that game at one point or another, but these guys are serious about achieving high scores we casual players couldn’t even imagine.

But the documentary tells the story of two guys vying to be the best in this strange competition. From the introduction:

Then we’ll hear from documentary filmmaker Seth Gordon, whose latest work explores the world of competitive video game playing. And that world is often not a pretty place, especially when a challenger threatens the reputation of the longtime legendary champion of Donkey Kong. Intrigue ensues, also deceit, conspiracy and dirty tricks. There are heroes, villains and sycophants. Seth Gordon’s film is titled King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters.

Please listen to the program first…then go to Variety to learn the recent outcome!

(And if you want to watch the documentary, it can be rented on iTunes, Vudu, Google Play, Amazon, YouTube, or Microsoft for only a few dollars.)
