Stories from Third Med: Surviving a Jungle ER

Filed under: Radio Today, Bob Edwards Archives — Charlie Summers @ 9:05 pm

In conjunction with BobEdwardsRadio.com and our own BobEdwards.Info, over the next few weeks we’re going to post “the documentaries,” the special programs built to perform a deep-dive into a specific issue. Once they are posted here, the files will be made available to those two websites so they may update the existing links to the programs. It’s past-time these were available for those searching to hear them again.

Next up is a listener favorite; Stories from Third Med: Surviving a Jungle ER. This program has been repeated quite a number of times on The Bob Edwards Show, and a time or two on Bob Edwards Weekend, but it had gone missing from the Internet…we take care of that problem now. From the introduction:

Today on the Bob Edwards Show, we are going to listen to war stories — from the doctor’s perspective. Medics are sent to the battlefield to heal, not to kill. Their experience may be fundamentally different than that of a soldier or marine, but as you will hear, it can be just as traumatic. During the Vietnam war, the Navy’s Third Medical Battalion was stationed with the Marines near the demilitarized zone during some of the worst battles. The doctors and corpsmen of the Third Med recently reunited for their fortieth anniversary and producer Ariana Pekary attended that reunion to record these stories which have otherwise never been told in public. For the full hour today, “Stories from Third Med: A Jungle ER.”

As I have done in the past, I have edited together the original broadcast as recorded off of the XM Satellite Radio and a studio-originating copy, to provide the best of both. (In this particular case, you can rather dramatically hear how the broadcast programming was acoustically compressed when compared to the studio audio.) Script/roadmap is also included below.
