Exploding Heritage Documentary

Filed under: Radio Today, Bob Edwards Archives — Charlie Summers @ 6:14 pm

In conjunction with BobEdwardsRadio.com and our own BobEdwards.Info, over the next few weeks we’re going to post “the documentaries,” the special programs built to perform a deep-dive into a specific issue. Once they are posted here, the files will be made available to those two websites so they may update the existing links to the programs. It’s past-time these were available for those searching to hear them again.

Next up, we have the story of mountain-top removal mining, Exploding Heritage. From the introduction:

The Appalachian Mountains are nearly 300-million years old—America’s oldest—and they’ve survived everything nature has thrown at them. But they might not survive man. Using a mixture of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil, mining companies are blowing up mountains to get to the valuable coal deep inside. Today on The Bob Edwards Show, “Exploding Heritage,” the controversy over mountaintop removal coal mining.

Powerful when first aired, it is equally relevant today. Produced by Andy Danyo Kubis, script/roadmap included.

Dangerous Crossings, Part 2

Filed under: Radio Today, Bob Edwards Archives — Charlie Summers @ 7:27 pm

Once they are posted here, the files will be made available to those two websites so they may update the existing links to the programs. It’s past-time these were available for those searching to hear them again.

This is the second part of Dangerous Crossings, the program’s examination of illegal immigration. From the program’s introduction:

Each year, Hundreds of illegal immigrants to the United States die in the southwestern desert. Migrants risk their lives in the harsh climate and terrain because the federal government has tightened security at the safer crossing points. Today we’ll ride along with Border Patrol officers as they try to do their job of securing our border with Mexico. Then we’ll take a second ride through the desert with members of the Samaritans, a group that maintains water stations in the desert and takes other measures to try to minimize the loss of life among illegal immigrants to the United States.

Again, produced by Chad Campbell; script/roadmap included below.

Dangerous Crossings, Part 1

Filed under: News, Radio Today, Bob Edwards Archives — Charlie Summers @ 3:01 pm

Once they are posted here, the files will be made available to those two websites so they may update the existing links to the programs. While putting this together, I found it surprising how many of these programs hold up and are just as relevant today, like the first two-episode documentary from March of 2006; Dangerous Crossings. From the first program’s introduction:

For the next two days, the subject of this program is illegal immigration to the United States, a matter that inspires a number of passionate opinions. You will hear from leaders who set Immigration policy here in Washington, from the police force charged with stopping illegal immigrants, from humanitarians trying to save immigrants from dying in the desert, from others who want migrants & their employers punished more severely—and you’ll hear from the migrants themselves—who leave friends and family behind—and risk their lives—in hopes of someday sharing in the American dream.

This two-part documentary was produced by Chad Campbell. Script/roadmap also included below.

Bob Edwards’ Conversation with Ben Bradlee

Filed under: Radio Today, Bob Edwards Archives — Charlie Summers @ 3:34 pm

One of the things about having spent eleven years meticulously (some might say “insanely”) recording The Bob Edwards Show every weekday morning is that I have a wealth of programming to listen to again. While I will frequently search out specific guests, I can also just grab a show randomly - after all, that is much like the show is still airing, allowing me some surprise about the “next day’s” guests. Last night, I opened up 2007, then June, then the fourth, and loaded the show into my player (an XM Inno I no longer use for satellite radio, since there isn’t much there to listen to anymore). This morning, I was pleasantly surprised to hear again Bob’s conversation with Washington Post legend Ben Bradlee, and thought you might enjoy listening to the program, too. From the introduction:

Ben Bradlee was executive editor of The Washington Post at several of the most important points of its history—and OUR history. Bradlee directed the paper’s coverage of the Watergate scandal that resulted in Richard Nixon resigning the Presidency in disgrace. Now a vice president for the paper, Bradlee recalls Watergate, the Pentagon Papers case and his close friendship with JFK.

In a time when inconvenient facts are labeled “fake news,” listening to Bradlee’s gruff voice and view of history is refreshing; and knowing this was one of only four humans who for more than thirty years knew the identity of the shadowy government leaker code-named for a pornographic movie, “Deep Throat,” adds considerable gravitas to the conversation held in Bradlee’s office at the Washington Post and produced by Ariana Pekary.

The program begins with Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson filling-in for David Broder to talk politics, including the recent primary debates. As usual, script/roadmap included below.
