Keely Smith on The Bob Edwards Show

Filed under: Radio Today, Bob Edwards Archives — Charlie Summers @ 5:58 pm

From Variety, December 17th, 2017: Keely Smith, Jazz and Pop Singer, Dies at 89

I saw this when it was first reported, and there was some discussion on it among the OTR (Old-Time Radio) circles I am a part of. But it wasn’t until I was working on something else this week that I noticed Ms. Smith had been a guest on The Bob Edwards Show, back in 2010. She was interviewed during the show’s trip to New Orleans for Jazzfest along with a serious collection of jazz’s greatest performers. From the introduction:

We”ll continue our New Orleans music series with singer Keely Smith. In the 1950’s Keely and her then husband Louie Prima, survived the demise of the Big Band Era by moving to Las Vegas and inventing the lounge act. Their show was the one to see whether you were a blue collar vacationer-a celebrity politician or a member of the Rat Pack.

First on the program, Bob talks to Patrick Jefferies about the Deepwater Horizon cleanup; and to close out the program, Bob takes his first (but I suspect not last) trip to Hansen’s Snow-Bliz for some shaved ice awesomeness. Nestled gently between the two, as it is suspected she would have liked to nestle between Chad and Geoffrey, is Keely Smith.

For Bob’s essay about the singer and the boys’ narrow escape, check out the Bob Edwards Radio Website.
