The Legacy of Buck Owens

Filed under: Radio Today, Bob Edwards Archives — Charlie Summers @ 8:29 pm

Ok, I really gotta check Facebook more often…

As many of you know, I am not someone who spends a lot of time on FB; the Internet is vast, and FB is only a tiny part of it. I know a lot of people think that’s all there is to the Net, and certainly Facebook encourages that impression, but it really isn’t the case. I spend my time “out here,” where I can write to you, dear reader, without having to tell Mark Zuckerberg my phone number or birthplace. (I know, I know, everyone’s on there. Actually, they ain’t.)

But I was “tagged” in a post from former Bob Edwards Show producer Chad Campbell, and didn’t even realize it until a few days ago. As soon after the holiday as I could, though, I hereby answer that post (and will tag him myself on FB for good measure).

Anyway, I present the program originally aired December 17th, 2013 where Bob interviews Randy Poe, co-author of Buck ‘Em! The Autobiography of Buck Owens. From the introduction:

Well it’s high time that we devote a program to the life and career of Buck Owens, a man who came of age just when Nashville was getting citified and disdaining the traditional sounds of country music. Not Buck. He not only stuck with the full twang of the fiddle and pedal steel sound-he also kept himself out of Nashville as much as he could. Buck Owens was a Bakersfield, California guy and though he scored 20 number one hits on the country charts, the country music establishment denied him honors for as long as it could. Buck told the story of his life on a series of cassette tapes that have now reached book form thanks to my guest today Randy Poe.

So sit back and enjoy a look back into the fascinating life of country music star Buck Owens. Script/roadmap is, of course, helpfully included. And I’ll strive in the New Year to check-in to Facebook a time or three every week so this kind of delay is never again an issue. As long as I don’t have to give Marky my social security number…
