Rafe Esquith on The Bob Edwards Show

Filed under: Radio Today, Bob Edwards Archives — Charlie Summers @ 6:28 pm

This is the teacher I wish I had - while I did have some excellent teachers who made a powerful impression on my younger self, none were as completely passionate about teaching as this man. He appeared a number of times on The Bob Edwards Show, but this is his first appearance, discussing his book, Teach Like Your Hair’s On Fire. His teaching methodology is pretty simple, really; “I know you can do this, so stop making excuses why you can’t and just do it.”

This program, from February of 2007, was well before his dismissal from the LA School District in 2015 - he was accused of odd and nebulous charges which he not only denies, but is taking to court. He is also suing the District in a class-action lawsuit that accuses the District of attacking older teachers close to retirement, to avoid paying pensions. And he has continued the Hobart Shakespeareans, promising Much Ado About Nothing this April.

So yeah, I’m a big fan who wishes I could attend that performance. Any time young people perform Shakespeare, the world becomes a little bit better place.

Script/roadmap included; first segment has Clive Crook talking about his Atlantic Monthly article The Ten-Cent Solution.
