Eugene Robinson - Raw!

Filed under: Radio Today, Bob Edwards Archives — Charlie Summers @ 3:07 pm

With the death of Fidel Castro, I considered running the very first Bob Edwards Show which included guest Eugene Robinson talking about his book, Last Dance in Havana: The Final Days of Fidel and the Start of the New Cuban Revolution. And I suspect I will eventually run that first show here on the blog, but…

Today I’m going to do something I haven’t done before; I’m going to run the raw, unedited interview conducted August 25th, 2004, taken from a DAT recorded in-studio and salvaged from the dumpster. This is not quite what you’re used to hearing; there are no music drops, no internal editing to remove the fits-and-starts that accompany any interview (remember, Bob has an entire control room talking to him in his ear). And you can tell the entire crew is still new to the place…Bob still doesn’t have a light to read his notes, and takes a moment just to find the studio light switch.

But there is more conversation between the two friends than made it to air…and it’s obvious from the relaxed atmosphere that these guys are comfortable with each other and just enjoying the conversation. So with apologies to segment producer Phil Harrell and the promise of running the original production another day, join me sneaking into the studio control room door, sit with me on the arm of the couch behind the producer and recording engineer, and listen to the conversation between host Bob Edwards and author Eugene Robinson.
