Merle Haggard Dead: Legend of Country Music Was 79

Filed under: News, Bob Edwards Archives — Charlie Summers @ 3:49 pm

From The Hollywood Reporter: Merle Haggard Dead: Legend of Country Music Was 79

Back in 2006, Bob Edwards spent an hour interviewing Merle Haggard; the interview aired Wednesday, February 8th, 2006 and is included complete below - feel free to listen right here on the page, or use the Download link to take a copy with you in your MP3 player.

But as an additional way to honor Mr. Haggard, I’m also including the raw interview contained on one of the DATs (Digital Audio Tapes) rescued from the dumpster by Executive Producer Chad Campbell. For this interview Mr. Haggard was in the studios of KFPR/KCHO, North State Public Radio in Redding, CA and Bob was in the XM studios in Washington, D.C. So you get to hear the, “Hello…?” I have become so accustomed to hearing when listening to these raw interviews. You will also, should you listen to both, begin to understand a bit better the work of a radio producer. The producer can take a mediocre interview and make it good; in this case, turn a fascinating interview into extraordinary radio.

Bob didn’t surround himself with good producers, he held out for excellent ones - listen to the credits at the end of these recordings, and give them the thanks they so richly deserve. And to give credit where credit is due, this interview was prepared and crafted by Producer Andy Danyo Kubis.

While I’m at it, I’m also including a PDF of the roadmap and script for the broadcast…with all this, you can almost imagine what it was like to roam the studio halls…
