The Bob Edwards Show Theme…Almost!

Filed under: Bob Edwards Archives — Charlie Summers @ 8:20 pm

In going through the mountains of stuff rescued by Executive Producer Chad Campbell from the offices of The Bob Edwards Show, it’s easy to overlook something important. There was a hand-written disc among the items, with “Bob Edwards Show Theme,” “Hard Times Come Again,” and “0:59″ written on it. I admit at first I moved it to the “deal with later” pile, but the more I thought about it, the more I wondered about that, “Hard Times Come Again” notation. So I stuck it in the CD drive, and sure enough there was a single track on it, 0:59 seconds in length.

But it wasn’t “the” Bob Edwards Show theme…it was slower, more introspective, and a little bit western. I couldn’t help but think it would never have worked as the theme for a morning show, where you need a little “oomph” to get you into your day. But it is a pleasant-enough melody, so I thought I’d share it with you.

I have added to it a show open from one of the DAT tapes (not only are there “raw” unedited interviews on those tapes, there are also show opens and various “tracks;” those sections between interviews like, “That’s John Doe, reflecting on his long career. Up next, John will return to discuss his many divorces…that’s after the break.”) just to give you a feel what the show might have sounded like every weekday morning…

Edit: Chad tells me this theme concept was edited from Stephen Foster’s Hard Times Come Again No More as performed by the amazing Mavis Staples on the CD Beautiful Dreamer. If you get the chance, listen to the original, and the power Ms. Staples gives to those words…

Edit 2: On November 8, 2004 Bob interviews the album’s producer Steve Fishell and played sections from the album, including this entire song. I found the DAT tape that contained the studio recording of this episode - if you’re interested, drop me a comment. If there’s demand, I’ll post the program.
