The Bob Edwards Show Theme…Almost!

Filed under: Bob Edwards Archives — Charlie Summers @ 8:20 pm

In going through the mountains of stuff rescued by Executive Producer Chad Campbell from the offices of The Bob Edwards Show, it’s easy to overlook something important. There was a hand-written disc among the items, with “Bob Edwards Show Theme,” “Hard Times Come Again,” and “0:59″ written on it. I admit at first I moved it to the “deal with later” pile, but the more I thought about it, the more I wondered about that, “Hard Times Come Again” notation. So I stuck it in the CD drive, and sure enough there was a single track on it, 0:59 seconds in length.

But it wasn’t “the” Bob Edwards Show theme…it was slower, more introspective, and a little bit western. I couldn’t help but think it would never have worked as the theme for a morning show, where you need a little “oomph” to get you into your day. But it is a pleasant-enough melody, so I thought I’d share it with you.

I have added to it a show open from one of the DAT tapes (not only are there “raw” unedited interviews on those tapes, there are also show opens and various “tracks;” those sections between interviews like, “That’s John Doe, reflecting on his long career. Up next, John will return to discuss his many divorces…that’s after the break.”) just to give you a feel what the show might have sounded like every weekday morning…

Edit: Chad tells me this theme concept was edited from Stephen Foster’s Hard Times Come Again No More as performed by the amazing Mavis Staples on the CD Beautiful Dreamer. If you get the chance, listen to the original, and the power Ms. Staples gives to those words…

Edit 2: On November 8, 2004 Bob interviews the album’s producer Steve Fishell and played sections from the album, including this entire song. I found the DAT tape that contained the studio recording of this episode - if you’re interested, drop me a comment. If there’s demand, I’ll post the program.

Bob Edwards Weekend Unaired Pilot!

Filed under: Radio Today, Bob Edwards Archives — Charlie Summers @ 3:10 pm

One of the very cool things about sorting through and archiving the files from The Bob Edwards Show is all the audio…with hundreds of DAT tapes, CDs, even DVDs, there’s so much to listen to I may not live long enough to hear it all. But this I’ve heard, and now share with you.

Back in 2005, the staff, in conjunction with PRI (Public Radio International) decided to sell a compilation program culled from the weekday show to public radio stations. They put together an internal pilot (which I admit I haven’t yet found) on which comments were made by XM Satellite Radio and PRI staff. (Oh, for those who don’t know, a “pilot” program is one produced to demonstrate what the show will be, and is used not only to fine-tune the program but later to sell to network or other potential purchaser.) Specific changes were made, according to the paperwork, and another pilot was produced. This one everyone apparently agreed upon, and so it was used as the sales tool.

This pilot was never aired on public radio…the only way you might have heard it is if you worked at a PRI member station in late 2005, where CDs were delivered along with a cover letter signed by Bob explaining what the show would be, and why the station should purchase it for air. They also included the “clock,” showing stations how the show would air time-wise, so stations could plan their news and promotional spots. Both these documents are also included here for download in the PDF file below. On the disks, they also included BBC World News at the top of each hour, to again demonstrate how the program would sound on-the-air.

For those of you missing Bob Edwards Weekend, here’s one more weekend show that is, unless you were a pubrad station employee or volunteer back in 2005, most likely new to you. Feel free to listen here on the page with the “Play Now” or “Play in Popup” links, or download to your MP3 player and take with you on your next drive!

Another Issue of The Digest Rejected by AOL…

Filed under: General, Old-Time Radio — Charlie Summers @ 2:05 pm

Folks, I have no idea what causes AOL to decide the Internet OTR Digest is spam, but issue #96 has been rejected to all addresses controlled by AOL. Hopefully this will clear before the next issue releases, but who knows the mysteries of America OffLine?

Filed under: Old-Time Radio, Bob Edwards Archives — Charlie Summers @ 1:36 am

Yep, I know I’m behind in posting episodes of the program to the podcast, but I’m jumping the queue here to post this episode. For those of you who heard our conversation on the final Bob Edwards Show or Bob Edwards Weekend, there are a few more questions answered here, and even some clips from Bob’s favorite interviews!

In this amazing episode, Charlie makes a road trip to the XM Satellite Radio studios in Washington, D.C. to turn the tables on National Radio Hall of Fame Inductee Bob Edwards - this time, Bob answers the questions! And after the interview, we’ll play some Old-Time Radio programs he mentioned; Our Gal Sunday, The Romance Of Helen Trent, Ozzie & Harriet, and of course some excerpts with Edward R. Murrow from Hear It Now!

Rafe Esquith vs. Goliath

Filed under: News — Charlie Summers @ 9:59 pm

If you are interested in education at all, you really need to educate yourself on the battle between famed teacher Rafe Esquith and the Los Angeles Unified School District:

From The Washington Post: The outrageous treatment of one of the nation’s most outstanding teachers

From CNN: Teacher Rafe Esquith files $1B suit vs. L.A. schools

Just wow. I hope Mr. Esquith teaches the administration of LAUSD a few lessons, and not with the gentle persuasion he uses on his students, but with the iron fist of the just.
