The End of The Bob Edwards Show

Filed under: Radio Today — Charlie Summers @ 10:50 pm

Was truly a sad day, with the end of a program I have listened to every weekday morning for over a decade (with only a very few exceptions, and even then I recorded the program and listened later). I am annoyed at the suits at SiriusXM, who never understood what an amazing program it inherited from XM. Like National Public Radio before it, I am annoyed at SXM enough to talk with my money.

But all the negatives aside, I want to thank both Bob Edwards and Executive Producer Chad Campbell for allowing me to be a part of the broadcast. It was an incredible opportunity to sit down in the studio and chat with Bob, to spend the day with Chad, even the maudlin duty of packing up the files was made enjoyable by the two.

And I can pretty much guarantee I will never again be in the company of the names I was this morning while listening to that final show - next to Bob, between Jack Gantos and Paul Thorn, I mean, wow.

(I only wish that, “Next Airing” were true…)

This Week on SummersTime, Bob Edwards!

Filed under: Old-Time Radio, Radio Today — Charlie Summers @ 4:09 pm
Bob Edwards, Working in His Office

This week on SummersTime, Charlie gets to turn the tables on National Radio Hall of Fame inductee Bob Edwards! After 30-years at National Public Radio, and almost 25-years hosting its flagship program Morning Edition, he left that organization to create the first satellite-radio-produced public radio program, The Bob Edwards Show, and later its companion show Bob Edwards Weekend, the first-ever satellite radio program to be sold to terrestrial stations. Bob talks about his career, his satellite radio program which is ending this week, and even a little Old-Time Radio talk!

For those of you who heard our interview on the final Bob Edwards Weekend, there are a few more questions and answers, and even some clips from Bob’s (and my) favorite interviews! First airing is September 28th at 6:00 PM Eastern, 3:00 Pacific with repeats throughout the week!

SummersTime is the Radio Once More show hosted by father-and-daughter team Kate and Charlie Summers. Their goal is to pick awesome Old-Time Radio shows that they share with each other, and then play them for you, too! Airtime schedule is posted both at the SummersTime website and at Radio Once More!

Here’s another promo for the show with some clips to whet your appetite!

On the Final Bob Edwards Weekend/Bob Edwards Show

Filed under: Radio Today — Charlie Summers @ 9:32 pm

I have been asked a few questions by friends and folks who read this blog (and I thank you both), so let me take a shot at answering…

  • Re: “Was it really you?” Yeah, really was. It occurred to me later I should have asked Executive Producer Chad Campbell to take a photo during the interview, but truthfully the trip down to the studios was for work, so I didn’t think about it until later. Hard to believe, though…and the studio equipment made me sound so much better than I really do, I’d love to stick the entire thing in my pocket and carry it around with me everywhere I go.

  • Re: “Biggest Fan;” I am a pretty hefty guy, but short, so I may not be the largest. As to the rest of it, well…”Biggest fan”…”Cyberstalker”…it’s kinda a fine line.

  • Re: “What was it like?” Interviewing Bob was one of the most exhilarating and terrifying things I have ever done - imagine going into someone else’s house and attempting to do what they do best. Bob was extraordinarily kind, never hung me out with a one-word answer, leaned me into questions I should have asked but almost didn’t, and was generally awesome. Listening to my voice you’d never know how badly my legs were shaking under the studio desk. And yet listening to him talk to me wasn’t all that much different than listening to the show…every time I turn the thing on, Bob talks just to me. Just as he talks only to you when you listen. That’s how radio makes everything so personal and intimate, and why we love the medium so much. (Ok, I got to actually see him across the desk while he talked to me that day.)

After listening to the first cut of my version of the interview, I realized I ended up getting one of the interviews Bob himself likes best. If you listen to the version on SummersTime (longer and not as expertly produced), Bob mentions he loves guests who do impressions, like Kevin Spacey or Peter Bogdanovich…then listen to Bob’s impression of Andy Warhol.

  • Re: “Is there more?” Of course. Not everything makes it into a broadcast. Some things are cut for time. Other things because the interviewer screwed up (innocent look). Other things because…well, I asked something that was just a curiosity point for me, so I’m not sharing. Promise someone something is off the record, and it is.

That said, the version on SummersTime is longer and contains additional questions and answers, as well as some clips from Bob’s shows with some of his (and my) favorite guests. It premiers on the Radio Once More channel at Live365.com Monday night September 28th at 6:00 PM Eastern, 3:00 PM Pacific, with replays throughout the week. Hit the SummersTime or the RadioOnceMore website for showtimes.

Ok, think that’s it. If you have additional questions for me, drop me a note or write ‘em in the comments section and if I get the time I’ll expand this post. If you have suggestions for questions I should have asked Bob and didn’t, don’t bother - I’ve already got a few hundred I should have thought of before…
