The End of The Bob Edwards Show?

Filed under: News, Radio Today — Charlie Summers @ 11:57 am

For a few decades now, I have started my mornings with Bob Edwards talking to me, slowly leading me into my day by kicking my brain into gear, gently forcing me to think. The idea that this will stop, to be blunt, simply terrifies me.

Still, Bob made an interesting announcement on September 3rd, transcribed below, which certainly sounds like the show has been cancelled, at least so far as new production is concerned (while SiriusXM continues to leech off existing recordings for the foreseeable future, and feeding PRI reruns for Bob Edwards Weekend). I am desperately trying to find out what the h*ll is going on, but my usual sources are understandably prohibited from discussing the issue.

I’ll keep digging, and will report anything I can as soon as possible. Until then, let’s enjoy this month’s programming.

[Cue Original Theme Music, which made my head snap around towards the speakers] In just a few weeks, this program will celebrate its tenth anniversary…ten years since the production team became satellite radio pioneers. What was then XM Radio was excited about finally having a million subscribers. Today the merged SiriusXM has more than 25-million subscribers. In those ten years The Bob Edwards Show has delivered more than five thousand long-form interviews…conversations, actually…plus a dozen documentaries that have won numerous national awards for journalism and broadcasting. Beginning Monday, September 29th, this show will be the place where you can find all your favorite interviews from a decade of conversations.

We hope you’ll enjoy hearing them again. I am deeply indebted to the talented people who have served as my producers, the ones whose names you hear at the end of each program. They have worked hard to make this final month before the change something special.
