From CNN: Pennsylvania woman blamed for her own rape

Any idea how embarrassing it is to constantly read idiotic headlines like this one with my state in them? Honest to goodness, this stupid nonsense makes me want to move.

Listening to early Bob Edwards Shows, here’s an XMPR bumper

Filed under: Radio Today — Charlie Summers @ 1:32 pm

I’ve been re-listening to early episodes of the Edwards show now that it has been cancelled, and cut a piece out to share with you. This will only be of interest to very long-time XM Satellite Radio subscribers; it’s a 30-second bumper used as an intro to The Bob Edwards Show, starting with those famous and deeply-missed seven notes.

SiriusXM cancels Bob Edwards Show, but weekly public radio show will continue

Filed under: Radio Today — Charlie Summers @ 2:17 pm

From Current.Org: SiriusXM cancels Bob Edwards Show, but weekly public radio show will continue

I cannot understand why PRI will continue to distribute the show, or why public radio stations would continue to buy a show which goes into perpetual reruns.

I Live a Rather Strange Life…

Filed under: General — Charlie Summers @ 10:49 pm

I know that title up there is a bit of an odd pronouncement to make, but it’s true, and has been true for a very long time. While not ancient, and not ready to pack anything in just yet, I admit I am spending more time as I get older thinking about all the weird coincidences that define my life, and am equally awed and frightened by them.

This rather reflective post started out because I’m pretty much of an average joe, a normal schlub who bops his way through life working at a job, mowing the lawn, replacing a cracked window glass, adding a washer to a faucet, and all the other things that are a part of every average joe’s life. And yet last week I drove a few hours to spend some time in the presence of incredibly smart people in a palatial setting saying goodbye and hello…hours spent watching others do a job far more fascinating than mine, people actually paid to satisfy not only their own curiosities but ours as well, about all manner of things. And watching one incredible talent who, braced by that staff of amazing people, made magic happen right in front of me.

See what I mean? Most of the time I am the most average and forgettable person you’ll ever meet, yet there are occasions when I am suddenly, and undeservedly, next to greatness. And the more I contemplate these times, I realize they are almost always the result of odd coincidences.

Bob Edwards Show Ceases Production

Filed under: News, Radio Today — Charlie Summers @ 12:10 pm
P-Dog Outside the Washington, D.C.-based Studios

Those of you who are regular readers of this blog (and I thank you both) have met my daughter’s stuffed prairie dog, P-Dog, before…he’s quite the little traveling companion, and this time he went with me on Monday to the Nation’s Capital, Washington, D.C. for my final visit to the XM Satellite Radio studios. (Yes, the merged company is named SiriusXM - but for this piece I’ll stick to the sign behind P-Dog.)

My purpose in the visit was to, bluntly, find out what the devil is going on with the show. Between the speculation last month reported by Politico, and the announcement I quoted last week, something certainly is. Where better to find the answer than at the source?

I should warn you, this post is going to randomly swing in two different directions; legitimate reportage discussing the future (or lack thereof) of the show, and simple fan-boi excitement at being around the crew that has kept me thinking every morning for the past decade. I apologize in advance for not being a totally dispassionate reporter, but by warning you up-front, you should be able to easily separate the two. Also, I will carefully note some things I have inferred from the conversations - some of the most interesting sections of conversations can be the silences and what prompts them.

After checking in with the guard’s station (and the merry mixups that entailed), producer Chad Campbell led me through the building to the office suite bracketed by the photographs of Edward R. Murrow and Red Barber. A quick hello to executive producer Ed McNulty and we were in Bob’s office.

The End of The Bob Edwards Show?

Filed under: News, Radio Today — Charlie Summers @ 11:57 am

For a few decades now, I have started my mornings with Bob Edwards talking to me, slowly leading me into my day by kicking my brain into gear, gently forcing me to think. The idea that this will stop, to be blunt, simply terrifies me.

Still, Bob made an interesting announcement on September 3rd, transcribed below, which certainly sounds like the show has been cancelled, at least so far as new production is concerned (while SiriusXM continues to leech off existing recordings for the foreseeable future, and feeding PRI reruns for Bob Edwards Weekend). I am desperately trying to find out what the h*ll is going on, but my usual sources are understandably prohibited from discussing the issue.

I’ll keep digging, and will report anything I can as soon as possible. Until then, let’s enjoy this month’s programming.

[Cue Original Theme Music, which made my head snap around towards the speakers] In just a few weeks, this program will celebrate its tenth anniversary…ten years since the production team became satellite radio pioneers. What was then XM Radio was excited about finally having a million subscribers. Today the merged SiriusXM has more than 25-million subscribers. In those ten years The Bob Edwards Show has delivered more than five thousand long-form interviews…conversations, actually…plus a dozen documentaries that have won numerous national awards for journalism and broadcasting. Beginning Monday, September 29th, this show will be the place where you can find all your favorite interviews from a decade of conversations.

We hope you’ll enjoy hearing them again. I am deeply indebted to the talented people who have served as my producers, the ones whose names you hear at the end of each program. They have worked hard to make this final month before the change something special.

FBI, Apple probe Jennifer Lawrence nude photo scandal

Filed under: General — Charlie Summers @ 1:18 pm

From CNN: FBI, Apple probe Jennifer Lawrence nude photo scandal

Ok, a word or three here about the real problem: cloud storage.

Folks like Steve Wozniak have been warning for years that “the cloud” isn’t to be trusted…while the idea that easy synchronization of data between devices is an awesome one, it implies we need to trust the service that is holding and syncing our data. This week, it was pretty clear we can’t; a simple programming error, coupled with weak passwords, allowed for celebrity data to be stolen. While admittedly the titillating photographs of celebs nude is what is making the news, photos of children, information on security systems, possibly even financial data and passwords to other, important websites may have been included in the script-kiddy hack, which makes this all pretty darned serious.
