Got a brand new robocall today!

Filed under: Telemarketing Scams & Robocalls — Charlie Summers @ 7:14 pm

This is the very first time I ever got this scam on my telephone, and this one is fascinating…there really is an American Chronic Pain Association, no idea whether they know about this scam or not, but here it is in all it’s bogus glory:

Don’t hang up! This is not a sales call! The American Chronic Pain Association, a national center for chronic pain management, has issued the following prescription pain pill alert: In an attempt to stop the growing use and abuse of prescription narcotic pain pills, America’s national health care providers are now authorized to provide a new experimental pain relief compound to anyone suffering from physical pain or discomfort. This compound cream is directly applied to the pain-related areas. It is non-narcotic, and extremely effective. This new pain relief compound is provided to you by your insurance carrier with no out-of-pocket expense to you, and your pain relief cream can be shipped immediately. Press 1 now to verify your address and delivery date. Again, press 1 now to arrange delivery. Press 5 now to notify your health care provider that you have refused this shipment.

Yes, of course, because every time a recorded scam artist tells me this is not a sales call, I automatically believe him…

Patricia “Pat” Hosley

Filed under: Old-Time Radio — Charlie Summers @ 11:51 am

From Susan Sigel (through Jack French) comes the sad news that Pat Hosley, radio and television performer and great friend to the Friends of Old Time Radio, passed away last Sunday, July 13, at 90 years. You can see Miss Hosley/Mrs. Kibbe’s obituary at The Examiner News. She performed at the last FOTR convention, starring as Jack in a Let’s Pretend re-creation of Jack and the Beanstalk. My daughter Kate had a minor role in that performance, making her pretty much the last generation who will be able to say they knew these wonderful actors and actresses.

Pat had to be one of the most cheerful people I have ever met. Her huge smile was contagious - when she walked into the room everyone in it would start to beam. And she always had an energy that belied her age…it would be fair to use the adjective “bouncy” when describing her.

With permission, here is a small part of that 2011 FOTR performance; with Arthur Anderson as Bulibus the Giant, Lynn Rogers as the Music Box, my co-host Katie Summers as Margo, Ivan Cury as Teddy, and Miss Pat Hosley starring as Jack.

Bob Hastings

Filed under: Old-Time Radio — Charlie Summers @ 5:12 pm

Terry Salomonson reports the unhappy news that Robert Francis “Bob” Hastings, Archie Andrews on radio and Elroy Carpenter on TV’s McHale’s Navy, passed away June 30, 2014. Bob and his wife Joan have four children, ten grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.

Bob was a staple at various OTR conventions around the country, including REPS, FOTR, the Ohio Nostalgia Expo where an award is given in his name, and others. He was also, as Terry put it, “one helluva friend.” I second that, and my daughter agrees, too - Bob always fussed over Kate.

Many of us here have fond memories of the time we spent with him, not only enjoying his performances at the conventions, but over coffee (or later in the evening, other beverages). Terry told me the first time he met Bob was back in 1967 or 1968; Terry took the Universal tour, and Bob was the “Celebrity of the Day” on Terry’s tour, the Universal star who chatted with the tour, taking questions and entertaining the crowd.

Last year at the Nostalgia Expo, Bob sat down with Kate and me for an in-depth interview, talking about his career in radio, television, voice-over, and films. That interview, which aired on Radio Once More last year, will be repeated next week (see the SummersTime website for information, and Radio Once More to hear our show), and is also available for download here on the blog)

We are going to miss you, friend.
