So We’re on Jury Duty…

Filed under: General — Charlie Summers @ 11:44 pm

This week we leave the world of computers and instead perform our civic duty as a member of the jury pool. Assume I’ll be a bit slower answering any email or posts, what with spending the day downtown without the use of computers…

Charlie, I was hoping to get your take on XM’s 30-day suspension of Opie and Anthony. It is causing quite a furor among subscribers. This LA Times story is representative of the reaction.

    RADIO
Listeners shocked by XM hosts’ suspension
Many cancel the service. Some suspect a proposed merger with Sirius is a factor in the punishment.

Na, it’s just causing a ruckus among the relative handful of kids who listen to these two obscene Stern wanna-be’s who were originally premium-content (cost $3/month extra) but couldn’t get enough people who thought they were worth the extra money to make their nut, so XM took them off premium and forced all subscribers to pay for their contract. If you read my post on Imus’ firing, the same thing applies here - these guys were hired to be juvenile and offensive, and they seem to be doing a bang-up job. It’s pretty obvious the only reason XM “suspended” them (gave them a month’s paid vacation is more accurate) is because they wanted to suck up to the FCC during the merger talks…if that weren’t a factor, XM would have given them a raise for bringing the publicity of their disgusting and degrading comments.

What we should be asking ourselves instead is why this childish and boorish base “humor” is listened to at all…why is it in this society that insulting people’s intelligence with this shock-jock garbage sells?
