Gas Prices and Coffee

Filed under: News — Charlie Summers @ 9:10 am

I didn’t get enough sleep last night, and so I went to my favorite coffee stand (inside a local grocery store) for a little fortification. In the time it took me to get that cappuchino, gas went up four cents a gallon.

There are two things about this I don’t understand. First, why is the price creeping up so gradually yet consistantly? There haven’t been any hurricanes lately to blame, yet still up it creeps. I can’t help but wonder if it isn’t a simple matter of seeing how much we’ll stomach, pushing the price up until there’s a howl of protest, then back it down a few cents.

The other thing I don’t understand is…why exactly is it that no one seems to care? As mentioned before here, Annie and I have cut our driving down to about as bare a minimum as possible, yet no one else seems bothered by the prices. Still they drive their SUVs, still they pay the price, and no complaints. It doesn’t make sense to me…it really wasn’t until it hit $3/gal that anyone seemed upset last summer. Is the industry depending on that, slowly creeping it to see how much we’ll take?

(*sigh*) If anyone can explain to me why my coffee and my gas are approaching the same price per gallon, please do. And if anyone knows why no one else seems to care, please explain that to me as well.

The Big Picture: DRM Crippled CD: A bizarre tale in 4 parts

Filed under: General — Charlie Summers @ 1:52 am

An oldie but a goodie; one person’s strugle with DRM (Digital Rights Management) in a favorite CD: DRM Crippled CD: A bizarre tale in 4 parts

Note how DRM really only hurts the honest folks; pirates (or computer-literates) already know how to get around this useless nonsense.
