Pat Robertson now has a competitor who also claims to "speak for God." Ray Nagin, Mayor of New Orleans, claims that Hurricane Katrina was God's punishment for invading Iraq. Here's the scoop on that:

I'm waiting for Jay Leno o r some other comedian to suggest that Islamic Terrorism is God's punishment for allowing people like Pat Robertson and Ray Nagin attain positions of authority (grin). Hey, it could happen. ;)

I realized a long time ago that there are two types of ministers ... one type attempts to speak 'about' Jesus, the other type attempts to speak 'for' Jesus. Robertson falls into the latter category. I suspect that in his early years, he was a nice fellow. But now, surrounded by a machine of media power, his mindset is such that he no longer feels enriched by his faith -- he feels empowered by it. He's dangerous ... but only because some people are conned into thinking of him as a religious authority. Most people can see right through the facade.

Personally, I am not sure if Pat Robertson is as dangerous as you write. True, he stills wields some influence among some conservative Christians, but I think that many regard him as a bit "over the edge." After the Chavez incident and now this, the man only appears to many as just an ancient windbag.

He makes better press than influence. Because of his past influence, I suspect the press makes more out of his comments than do other conservative Christians.

Personally, I find him better than some of the comics I read! After all, he has become a cartoon character.

Ditto.
And I promise that, as a believing Christian myself, I speak out against Robertson's inanities whenever it's appropo. I was even more annoyed by his last gaffe - the "hitman" comments.
If Jesus is our model here, I don't seem to remember him ever calling for a contract on Ceasar, Pilate, or Herod...

I couldn't agree with you more. It is time that "normal" Christians shout down this irrational man. It is time that "normal" Christian priests, ministers, pastors, deacons, etc. denounce this man and others like him from the pulpit. They must be stopped.
