I Hate Blogs…
You know, I really hate blogs.
I think they’re silly. They tend to be little more than restatements of someone else’s blog, with silly comments and half-baked “wisdom” loosely connected by unnecessary nonsense. They are usually little more than an outlet for the undeserved vanity of the author, showing more lack than talent. Blogs are, by and large, completely useless.
Why? Well, first off, I’ve been “blogging” since before blogging was cool. I’ve been publishing The News Pages for a whole lot more years than I care to think about, with links to off-beat news stories, personal opinion pieces, and ascerbic comments. So this isn’t exactly a foreign concept, even if it went by a different name and was static pages built with Userland Frontier (a way-cool IAC language/application for the Macintosh but a dreadfully ugly web server and a rather poor flat-file database).
Next, a friend of mine has been bugging me to create an, “Old-Time Radio Blog,” as if such a thing were possible. I mean, blogs are about people, not things, so an “Old-Time Radio Blog” makes about as much sense as a “Cloud Blog.” But as the maintainer of the OTR Digest, I do know a little about the subject, and I have some strong opinions on many facets of the hobby, so maybe having an outlet will improve my disposition somewhat. (Why don’t I spew my opinions on the OTR Digest? Anytime I do, some people assume the opinions are the “official” stance of the Digest instead of my own little personal rants. I can’t help that some people are that sensitive, so I end up posting very little to the Digest. I kinda miss it.)
And finally, some of my clients want blogs of their own…and I can’t very well install and maintain software on their sites without being familiar with it. So I installed a boatload of testing software before settling on WordPress (which is ok, excepting the over-reliance on CSS instead of respecting the client’s layout settings, but I’m slowly getting used to all the web apps that have no respect for the original design of the World Wide Web even if I don’t like it), and here we are. Will I stay with WordPress? If I had to guess, I’d probably say no, but who knows…I’ve installed a boatload of different blogging software, and still really haven’t found the best match to me. (I’ve been keeping a log of my misadventures with the various software packages…maybe one day I’ll post it to the blog just for giggles.)
I have no intention of having this blog deal solely with OTR, although I will probably talk abut it frequently. This blog will reflect me and all my interests…I have a lot of them, you know. It will probably reflect my humor which I admit isn’t to everyone’s taste, but hey, it’s my blog. I will try to be entertaining, even when opining the opposite of your inclination (which will probably happen with uncomfortable frequency).
I can’t promise you’ll always like it, but I can promise it’ll be an interesting ride.

Bon chance and bon journey, Charles. Nice idea to have a ‘blog’ for ‘OTR folks’, et al - why not? It will be interesting to see the posts in the weeks ahead. I’ll be lookin’ in! Thanks for doing this.

Good God! A Blog? Chuck?? (That would be like me doing political analysis on the radio!)
The world must have shifted on its axis! (Or, it WILL, now that some intellegence has been added to the world of blogs! Congratulations!)
